You’ve finally booked a summer family portrait session!  You’re excited and can’t wait for the day, until the panic sets in…what will we wear?!   We all want to look our best, especially in family portraits.   Here are some quick tips to get you started:

Don’t be afraid to use color!  Bright red, pink, purples, blues, yellows and orange all look wonderful against the lush green….the brighter the better!   

Most photographers will let you work in a change of clothes, so go for it!   And give the kids the opportunity to dress themselves for one outfit… let them express themselves.  You’d be surprised to see their natural instinct for unexpected color combinations that pop.  Then you can compromise with an outfit that you love in the next set of shots

 Think complementary colors while dressing siblings and family members, but not identical…add a little uniqueness to each one ;)   When you’re feeling stuck and not quite sure where to start,  pick an outfit that you love on your youngest and then build off the colors for the rest of the family.

Take off the socks and shoes!  It’s summer-time and flip flops!  Better yet, kids love to run barefoot in the grass… so let’s all take off our shoes!   Add some funky color to your nails for a little extra flair

And bring along any favorite things too…a doll,  a special tattered lovey, train, wooden sailboat, or a dinosaur.   Do you love to read, or play board games asa family?  Toss a few of those things into your bag that day…along with a snack, some water and maybe a pack of skittles for a little extra treat when they’re needing a break ;) 

 This is your day, I want it to be special.   It should be about capturing your family as a whole, the things that make you a family!

If you haven’t had portraits in awhile, summer is a wonderful time.  Sunkissed skin and beautiful sunsets  ;)

This was a fun senior session, it was just crazy and spontaneous.   She was receptive to every crazy idea and very outgoing. I love that kind of adventurous spirit.  She was accompanied by mom and brother, who I included in a few photos…much to his chagrin ;)  We went from location to location working our way through town.

Seriously, I could have played all day–and wish I’d been able to– Good luck with your last year of high school!

When it comes times for your portraits, remember to  keep it simple.   A nice subdued look is sure to make you look awesome, and give you senior portraits that you will cherish for the rest of your life.  And no worries, I’ll walk you through the process…it’ll be fun and super easy.

Real life, Real family, Real time….

~Unrehearsed.  All the time~  Isn’t that the way it should be?  It’s important for my clients to know these sessions don’t usually go the way we had planned.  With kids…predictability doesn’t count

We just go with the flow..of the little people that is ;)  We do what they do, we get on the floor, we play, dance and run…

These are the moments to treasure…the real ones.  The images we can look back on and say “Remember that day?”

Don’t worry about how everything will play out.  It will do it’s own thing.  Like life…there’s no magic button or do-over.  Just enjoy it
